Composer David Lamb says this about the recording:
It is very impressive. The recording is clean and the balance is good.
The amazing thing to me is that this group of amateurs can sound so good.
There are some clams here and there, but the overall impression is really
stunning. You can't miss the dedication and passion of all those
musicians who are playing for sheer love. And Simon is a true Mahlerian in the
way he grasps the total form of the symphony and does not let the details
detract from the architecture of the whole.
To my taste, the last movement is the most successful. I don't know of any
conductor who makes more of the bizarre and nightmarish passages of this
movement, and yet Simon somehow keeps it all under control. Hammer lovers will
be more than satisfied; the hammer blows are fabulous on this recording.
