Northwest Mahler Festival welcomes Adam
Stern back for his third reading session.Mr.
Stern has been an active presence in our community's musical life
since moving to Seattle in 1992. As Associate Conductor of the Seattle
Symphony, Stern led numerous performances in
virtually all of the orchestra's series. In his
position as Music Director of the Northwest Chamber Orchestra (NWCO) from
1994-2000, he introduced dozens of works to the orchestra's repertoire.
Highlights of Stern's programming have included the Seattle Symphony
premiere performances of Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 3 and Elgar's
Symphony No. 2, and, with NWCO, the West Coast premiere performances of
Gerard Schurmann's Variants and Richard Danielpour's Sonnets to Orpheus,
Book I. Stern made his New York orchestral conducting debut in 1998 with the
New York Chamber Symphony in an acclaimed all-Baroque concert at Alice Tully
Hall.
Increasingly active as a pianist, he has performed as soloist with
Seattle Symphony and NWCO, mastering concertos by Mozart (Nos.13 and 19),
Bach (Nos. 3 and 6) and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in performances
conducted by Gerard Schwarz and Yoel Levi. In addition, Stern has composed
several works for Seattle ensembles and theaters, including Partita
Concertante for the Rainier Chamber Winds and three scores of incidental
music for Seattle Repertory Theatre and A Contemporary Theatre (ACT). His
most recent score was incidental music for the Seattle premiere of the hit
play Art. A popular speaker, Stern has given countless lectures for Seattle
Symphony, NWCO, Seattle Opera, Seattle Chamber Music Festival and Rainier
Chamber Winds. He and his wife Kathleen (a violinist in the Seattle
Symphony), share their love of the arts with their children, Ella and Oscar.
